CASCADE DIVISION SOFTBALL LEAGUE HISTORY
Past Division Champions
The idea to start the Cascade Division Softball League was brought to the table in 2004 by Bryan L., coach of the Dawgs. His team had been playing in another
recovery-based league in the Everett area, and they where ready for a change.
Bryan had heard about the existing Clean and Sober Softball Association of Washington. When he looked into whether or not they had a division in the Everett, WA area, he found they did not. Bryan asked around to other people he knew in the softball community to see if anyone else was interested in starting a league or playing in one if he got it started. What he found was that there were lots of people interested in playing, just not interested in helping get it started.
Bryan took the information he gathered from talking to others and went to the Clean and Sober Softball Association's next meeting. They brought the idea of starting a division in the Everett area before the board of directors and its members. Their idea was met with great excitement and the willingness to help get the league started. They decided to call it the Cascade Division. Bryan was supplied with all the info needed to get the league started, and the rest was left up to him. At the CSSA meeting, the current Central Division Director, Jon C., spoke with Bryan and told him that he would help him anyway he could. Jon was a great resource to have for the beginning of the Cascade Division.
Filled with excitement, they took the information and went to work. First they contacted the local parks and recreation office and found that the Senator H.M. Jackson Park was available. This was great news and exactly what was needed.
They went back to everyone they had talked to about starting the league. And to their surprise, not as many people where interested in joining the league as had so indicated before. This didn’t stop them though. They wanted it to happen and were willing to do the work needed to get it done.
In the first season, they had 6 teams sign up and commit to playing in the inaugural season: Dawgs, Hustlers, Resentments, Hope & Faith, Renegades and the Bruisers. Some of the teams where from the same league that Bryan and the Dawgs came from, and some were teams from other CSSA leagues. Although there weren’t as many as they had hoped for, there were enough to schedule the first games in April of 2004. Bryan and Jon were very excited to see all their hard work paying off. The day turned out to be the first of many that gave people a place to belong and have fun in recovery. We would like to extend a very warm thank you to all of the teams and their players that signed up and made the inaugural season a success. It is greatly appreciated.
The season went off without a hitch. They played all of their games and ended the season with a playoff tournament. Congratulations to the Dawgs for winning the inaugural season playoffs of the Cascade Division. It only seems right since that is Bryan’s team.
One thing that the Cascade Division did that was a little outside the norm was to have each team take a turn during the season putting on a BBQ for the entire league. This included friends, families, umpires and anyone else that was in attendance. The BBQ’s are a huge success and continue to be a big part of the Cascade Division.
In the years to come they wanted to expand the size of the league. They had two fields to play on and figured they could handle as many as 12 teams. So once again they went out and recruited teams they knew from the softball community. Each year they added new teams, and by 2008, they had all twelve slots filled.
We are all very proud to be part of the Clean and Sober Softball Association and the Cascade Division. It has been proving itself for years to be a safe and fun place for people in recovery and their families. Thanks to all that have been a part of creating the most fun recovery-based environment in the state. We look forward to the years to come.
